I think the actual habit of having the cigarette in you hand is the addictive part more so.I chewed for about 10+ years. One day I threw the pack away and never did chew again. I did lower my BP, , but I never had a cavity all the time I was chewing.
Nasty habit ,and I'm not advocating any one taking it up. I tink there is also a certain menatlity make up in a person that makesthem suseptible to any type of addiction _________________ If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and sawbucks.

I smoked for several years and was up to 2-3 packs a day when I quit, I went from smoking to chewing, yep, 2-3 packs as day. I have always done everything to excess I guess. I have sinus trouble and once got hooked on Hall's mentholyptus cough drops. I would buy the large economy size bag. My wife finally told me she was tired of smelling the menthol so I then realized what I was doing and quit.
I am tobacco free and have been since 2000 but I could still smoke a cigar the size of the Washington monument or chew a case of tobacco today.
I guess the only habits I have left are sex, hunting and old cars. I told someone recently that the only things I enjoy are sex, hunting and messing with old cars and how it was a shame that I wasn't good enough at any of them to make a living.
By the way Saddlesore, I visited the link at the bottom of your post again, and I thought to myself (as the guy on the movie Field of Dreams said) Is this Heaven!! _________________ See ya in the woods
I quit smoking 1/16/76 but kept dippin until 1/2/10. Had a total knee replacement in April and thought how a canofcope might help me survive a 2 nite stay in the hospital. One the 2nd day after my 2nd dip I saw my blood pressure jump from 135/60 to a killer 191/93.
My wife (an RN) said if I ever start dippin again she would just go ahead and kill me and put me out of HER misery.
Now I'm having 2nd thoughts of buying a can for the long trip to Co. in Oct.
Later
