Spring Bear season will open here in Oregon in about a month and a half! YAY!
Who is going to be hunting spring bear this year? On bait or spot and stalk? Rifle, bow or muzzle loader? Will you be picky or will you shoot the first decent sized bear you see? What do you do with or make out of the bear meat? Does your state have a manditory law to check the skull/teeth? _________________ Don't tell me there are limits when there are footprints on the moon! |

No spring bear season in Colorado, and baiting is illegal. That's what happens when wildlife is managed through the ballot box. |

No baiting here in Oregon either. And we have so many of them it's ridiculous. But it really does make for a super fun spot and stalk hunt! I'm going to try to shoot mine with a bow this year. I'm a little nervous about it...but in a good way! And yes...pistol will be on my hip in case I piss him off! _________________ Don't tell me there are limits when there are footprints on the moon! |

Last year I got my first year and it was a lot of fun so I hope to do it again this year. It will probably be a spot and stalk hunt. In Wyoming you are required to check the skull in with the game and fish and they remove a tooth for aging. I guess I don't know what the average age of bears shot is, but mine last year was 13 years old, that seemed old to me. _________________ Ethan Starck |

13 years old is a fairly old bear in the wild. I believe the average age killed here in california is 8 years old. Out of 11 bears I've taken here, 9 of them were 8 years old or younger. I did kill one that was 13 and the oldest was 18 years old. He was so old he was losing his teeth.
There is no spring bear season here and baiting is illegal. We can not carry any type of firearm during archery bear.
Archery bear opens the 3rd Saturday of August in the Sierras . I can't wait , but I guess I will have to ! _________________ Steve

Kinda wished we had a few bears down around here. If you get a really old bear, do ya'll still eat em?
I have had bear roast for Thanksgiving dinner back when I lived up in New Mexico. Real dark meat and kinda greasy, but not bad. It reminded me of BBQ'ed racoon. _________________ Just movin on down that trail. |

A bear hunt is on my "bucket list" but lately I have not been able to find that list. _________________ http://knotholesawmill.com |

Many moons ago, We cooked up a bear roast for Thanksgiving !
My wife baked it with an orange glaze baste and backed it up with stuffed wild mushrooms that I had collected .
That meal was a big hit with our family and guests.
I ground that 18 old bear into burger and sausage. It was very good . Maybe a little chewier than the younger ones !
I've never had barbeque raccoon but if it taste like bear I'd be up for it ! _________________ Steve

Magic - I think I just found your list! Buy an over the counter bear tag (spring and/or fall). More public ground than you could even begin to cover! In the spring....find the south facing meadows/cleared units/clear cuts and in the fall...find the berries! _________________ Don't tell me there are limits when there are footprints on the moon! |

I'm off to Idaho in June for archery bear. I've been fortunate over the years to have taken bears with rifles, smoke pole and even a truck.
The hunt will be over bait but I'm actually considering using hounds. _________________ "a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." |
