American Pioneer powder

Has anyone used American Pioneer powder (loose or pellet)?
I'm thinking about using it and I'd like some opinions on it.

By now, Im sure that you have tried American Pioneer Powder?

I started shooting this powder a couple years ago after many agonizing hours of inconsistent groups. I prefer the Jim Shockey Gold. In the state of Wa, we are not able to use more then a #11 cap or musket cap. I have had a very hard time with other powders being consistent in burn with minimal fire behind them.

Through much testing, I found that as the barrel became fowled or the breech plug developed powder residuen less fire was making it to the powder. The competitors Pellets were and absolute nighmare for me, however I have not yet tried APP's pellets.

It's my opinion that this powder does just as it claims not to mention the ease of cleanup!

Many of you may cringe at this, however I will go out and shoot 12 shots without as much as patch down the barrell.

Iron sights with 3" groups at a 100y ards. I am very satisifed beings I can't hardly see 100 yards.

I love this product and see no reason to go back.

Thank you very much WS for your opinion. Based on that as well as what I have read about these powders, I think I will get some Jim Shockey Gold and give it a try. And no I haven't tried these powders as yet. I will remedy that asap.
I will be using the pellets. I'll report back when I have had a chance to give the "Gold" a good tryout.

I've used the American Pioneer ffg for a couple of years now and I've been real happy with it for accuracy, and ease of cleaning. I hunt big game exclusively with muzzleloaders. I've got a deer and an elk in my shed right now aging that were both killed with APP. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't meter through my powder measure as smooth as Pyrodex or 777. I just bought a pound of 777 and will work up a good load with the 444 gr power belt flat nose bullet. Give the APP a try and you'll most likely enjoy the easy clean up and the group size.

How does the APP work in rock locks? Anyone tried it?

I shoot a .54 cal Lyman Hawkin and have modified it w/ a musket nipple as I thought the LITTLE caps weren't enough and hard to manage w/ cold arthritic fingers.
After bustin 100 caps before a Colorado BP hunt, I got fed up w/ brushing/cleaning the bore every 3-4th shot. That's when I saw the great white hunter talking about APP Gold and bought a pound at G. Mt. It sat, unopened in my possibles box for a year until 2 weeks ago when I got the offer to go BP deer huntin' in E. Texas.
The week end before, I opened up the gold and shot 15-20 rounds and was HIGHLY impressed w/ the minumal cleaning routine. Every 4th round took one pass w/ a brush to get the Hornady ETP sabots seated but that was it.
The rifle shot a 2 3/4 " group @ 100 yds. and grouped the same w/ the power belt elk load. I had only one dry fire popped cap. I cleaned the bore, nipple and flash hole as usual trying not to leave any moisture or oil in the system.
Loaded w/ fresh musket caps and a now "Clumpy" stuck together gold powder, I went hunting. I sat in the blind thinking of how the gold could've had a reason to clump up. Practice was under dry conditions, safety called for a closed cap on the lb. of powder after reloads. After a minute or two of glassing the new day in the pineys of E Texas I gave it no more thought. A doe and large yearling came into my shooting lane. I cocked the hammer back, then the set trigger, placed the tru-glow lime ball on her ribs and touched off a loud POP. They spooked and left and I left for camp where I removed the nipple. I placed a couple of grains of Swiss BP in the flash hole, reprimered and it shot like it was supposed to. I was thinking that maybe I had not thouroghly cleaned the gun after my practice session and that was the reason and that this 'bore cleaner would solve the problem.
That afternoon I returned to my stand only to have the same thing happen again!!
I fumbled for another primer w/o spooking the doe and on the 2nd squeeze, I got results, a nice tender 1 1/2 yr old doe for the freezer.
The end results are this. I've never had this problem w/ any other standard BP.
I don't know how long this one lb. of gold sat on the shelves @ G. Mt. I don't know if my cleaning techniques were to blame but it happened.
Like previously posted " I like the smell of good old BP" and I'm not willing to hear anymore POPS again no matter how much I have to clean between shots.
You be the judge and decide on your own. I'm not pointing the finger @ anything or anyone. This was just my 2 cents worth.
You can bet no matter what powder I shoot, I'll be pullin' nipples and priming flash holes on all of 'em when huntin'.

I have read some encouraging reports in some hunting magazines about Alliant Powder "Black MZ".

I haven't tried any of thos more expensive powders,but after messing around with Pyrodex and 777 and having them degrade,I went back to standard black powder. It ignites at a lower temp, and really isn't all that hard to clean up.

After all,most ML seasons were set in place to mimic primitive weapons.
