I took the extended family (oldest son's fiance joined us) on a Lake Michigan fishing charter back in May 2016. We went with Noble II Charters again, which I think was my third time on Capt Florek's boat. We had decent weather and caught some nice fish.

Earlier this year, we decided to book the boat again. We picked May 24th, since that was roughly the time we went back in 2016. This trip, the younger son brought his fiance, the older son is now married. It was a half day charter, boarded at 11:30 am. The weather has been cold and rainy, that day was no exception. I've had good luck fishing in the rain in the past, figured it might happen again. We had an extremely slow start to the day, first fish didn't come until we were 2 hours in. At one point, we had 2 coho on at the same time, but that was the exception. Ended up with 10 coho and Julie caught the Lake Trout. She keeps outfishing me, not sure what to do about that short of leaving her home. Wink

Looks like a good fishing trip. Family fun together is something we should all work to do. Keep us informed through the days ahead.

What part of Iowa do you call home? I would love to hunt Iowa, a friend has a small place there near Des Moines but it isn't great for multiple hunters. I'm thinking Iowa has a draw system for non-residents? I have hunted in northern Missouri close to Iowa but didn't think about riding up to see the area.

Is land expensive to lease there or is there public land that is good hunting. I am looking for a place to go on my one away from home hunting trip for the year.

We lost our lease in Missouri when some came in and paid a lot more than we were paying!

Lots of nice fishies and nice smiles!!

At one time (1976) you couldn't get a non resident license in Iowa- has that changed?

Sorry for the delayed response.

Iowa is crazy for a non-resident to get a deer license. It is a lottery system. The tag will be around $700, that is if you draw the first time. Add a $60 preference point for each year you apply, some areas of the state are needing 4-6 points to draw. That's for archery though, might have better success in the draw for gun season.

Before applying, you need to decide if you want to hunt the very small amount of public land available, try to find permission for private ground (harder to find by the day) or looking at a hunting lease. Leasing seems to be the norm these days. I have no idea what leases cost, I'm not interested in that.

Thanks for the reply, I would still love to hunt Iowa but I doubt it is going to happen. My friend is selling his property and probably my chance to hunt the state.

Hunting around home this year and got my tags for Illinois so I guess that will be my big trip for the year. I really want to go to CO next year for a guided hunt, I have 17 points and figure I'm not getting any younger so I might as well burn them while I can. That would be only the second guided hunt I have ever been on. I am going to look at last years draw odds and see what areas are in my point count. Looking at 40 pretty close!

I remembered Iowa had some restrictions on NR.

We are planning to go back to Wyoming- probably for the mid October rifle season. I need to tighten up my groups and do a lot of off hand and shooting stick practice.

the 100 yard aim point is the center with impact zero 2" high and 1" right. (Don't know why the 4 are left. Whatever I was doing i repeated it ) Need to adjust left and another 2" high- should zero at 200 yards and need a 8" hold over at 300 yards. Don't see me shooting 400- needs a 22" hold over. Fixed retical

Nosler Trophy Grade 180 30-06

WY, is it a draw hunt? I remember that they were going to some kind of point system after my last trip. Looking back it has been 10 years since I hunted WY with my friends. They moved back here and he is on his second term as the county sheriff, he was an X GA State Patrolman before retiring and moving to WY for awhile.

What part of WY are you going to? I hunted just south of Yellowstone in the wilderness and also around Saratoga/Encampment area. Elk only.

Red, It's the same as last year- a tag donated from donors to disabled vets by the state thru Hunting with Heroes Wyoming.

The area is between Big Piney ( NW) SE of Jackson and SW of Pinedale.

Looking at Google Map, that should be pretty good hunting and scenery too! I am looking forward to your trip reports and photos.

Have a good hunt!
