|
|
Headed out next week for a week long trail ride out of a pretty plush base camp. I'm going to use it as a shake out trip for some new camp gear as well.
One of my biggest challenges has been getting the coffee right in the percolator on the coleman stove. Seems like it either tastes burnt, weak, gritty, or a combination of all the above.
I'm going to try a perc specific grind larger than my drip coffee at home. The pot has the basket with holes in it.
What are your secrets to good camp coffee? _________________ Sometimes when you think the deck is totally stacked against you and that elk hunting is the stupidest activity on earth, remember that there are thousands of people out there who would love to be miserable like you right now... |

+1 Always works for me. No need to get all technical about it. Just put coffee and water in a pot, cup, whatever, and heat it until it gets to a good boil. Remove from heat and enjoy. _________________ There is NO second place winner! |

Just hit the pot with a raw egg or a slug of cold water before you pour the coffee. The grounds will stick to the egg, or the cold water will drive them to the bottom of the pot. |

They make round filters that go in the bottom of the perk basket that prevents the grounds from clogging the holes.
You can use the "singles". I use them for a quick cup during the day.
Another option is to use a French Press. Here is the one I use.

Magic, I know what you are talking about, but these guys think a "French Press" is something from Brokeback mountain...

After eyeing that bar in the back ground, that looks like a party i need to be attending. I'm with the other guys, boil water w/ grounds and enjoy. |

Arrowslinger,
That is just the Camp bar...
At the Main Bar it looks like One Track's family reunion. There is at least one good natured wrestling match occuring at all times under the big tent. Bloodshed is rare, but not unexpected.
New Guests are advised to buy 2 weeks worth of shirts at Goodwill. They don't tend to make it past Lunch camp. Folks don't have to get in the middle of the fray, but there is always someone to "PLAY" with if you feel 10 ft tall and bullet proof. But you better have a sense of humor when you get thrown OVER the bar.
Pacifists usually just jump over when they see they are out matched.
I'll see if I can finsd somme pictures after next week. _________________ Sometimes when you think the deck is totally stacked against you and that elk hunting is the stupidest activity on earth, remember that there are thousands of people out there who would love to be miserable like you right now... |

2rocky,
For such a tough camp, I am not sure why you don't just man up and drink your coffee the way it comes out. Spit out the grinds... or just swallow them... they won't hurt you!
If that doesn't work buy a generator and take your drip coffee maker with you They also make them in 12 volt.
Another option is the old funnel type that has a paper filter. Just boil water and poor is through the coffee grounds in the filter. You can't screw that up! _________________ Stay down wind of your quarry, upwind of your hunting partner and Stick'em where they breath!

Well the Coffee was a hit. I ground a pound of French roast in a coarser grind and used the basket percolator. The perc grind didn't leak through the basket as much. My best result was when I let it perc longer and slower.
I'm gonna do a pot in the morning to see if it was the outdoors that made it taste good or whether it really was better. _________________ Sometimes when you think the deck is totally stacked against you and that elk hunting is the stupidest activity on earth, remember that there are thousands of people out there who would love to be miserable like you right now... |

Throw your grinds in an old sock and boil. Besides i love the looks i get in camp when you pull the sock from the coffee pot. Using a clean sock is at your discresion.
