New to the forum. Long time elk hunter, some with bow most with rifle. Looking for any info on unit 76 first rifle (Oct 16th). My two brothers and myself. Tired of chaseing points for unit 61. We hunted this unit years ago around Ruby lake and California park. Hunting got tuf after the second day. Lots of outfitters working the area. We have horses and big tent and wood stove so would like to set up a base camp furture in. Any suggestions would sure be considered. Your post sure sound like you know the area. Thanks |

It was me.Looking for all the info I can get .I've been bugging everyone I can find who has hunted there.I talked to a few hunters and a forest service ranger and got some good info.
I too got tired of chasing 61.Besides I have a 16 yr old son who I wanted to join me in the points game. The more I learn about the unit the more I'm happy with cashing the points in.
aw, get back with me at the end of September and I'll give you a report. |

I too was lucky enough to draw a tag in that unit and with the way things are looking it will be my only chance to hunt it. Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.
thanks, IB _________________ IB |

How many points did it take to draw. I have 9 each for Elk and Muledeer but screwed up and missed the dead line to get points this year. I have a friend who has a cabin near Creede and might just have to visit him next season. I don't think I am ever going to get to take "the hunt" where it takes more than 10-12 points. _________________ See ya in the woods |

Two of us had 12 points and one had 11 points.
I had hunted in this unit around 20 odd years ago around Ruby lake, California park from Fern creek trail head. Saw lots of elk the first day but after that it got hard. Lots of outfitters working up there. Chased a 300+ class bull around the first morning with several cows and raghorns but could not get a clear shut. He was within 30 yards at one time but surrounded by cows. We took a 300" 5 point out of that hunt off squaw creek. |

Unit 76 is getting to be a popular unit cause it's taken less points to draw the say 61. The unit is rugged, but still holds some good bulls. Although the monsters ain't there anymore, you'll kind a 330ish bull in places.
The F&G guys has slacked off a lot in watching the boundaries, and several outfitters have camps on the edges and will go into 76 to kill bulls. Killing a bull in the high country with a rifle is easy to do in 76.
Areas that offer easy access seem to get hunted the hardest, but guys willing to travel horseback into the areas seem to do very well one big bulls.
I gave up on 76 a few years ago, seems the lil honey holes were discovered. And with the drawing system it gets harder and harder to draw tags anymore. States like Idaho are producing some great bulls on public land without the hassels of drawing.
And yessir, I sure would love to spend a week in British Columbia chasing bulls..... |
